Alberta-Ottawa agreement on methane targets stokes dismay for some, relief for others - Canada News
6+ hour, 55+ min ago (886+ words) The prospect of building a new bitumen pipeline to the West Coast has garnered most of the attention since Ottawa and Alberta announced their sweeping energy accord late last month, but another item has left environmentalists dismayed and energy industry players pleasantly surprised. The federal and provincial governments have agreed to extend by five years the timeline for the oil and gas sector to reduce its methane emissions. Draft federal regulations had called for a cut of 75 per cent from 2012 levels by 2030. The memorandum of understanding would see the two orders of government enter into an equivalency agreement before April 1 with a 2035 target date to reduce emissions by 75 per cent over 2014 levels. "The existing draft methane proposed laws put down by the federal government are completely unworkable. They're not even close to being practical or realistic," said Tristan Goodman, president…...

Elections Alberta gets extra $6.7M to handle outburst of recall petitions
12+ hour, 9+ min ago (719+ words) Alberta election officials are getting an extra $6.7 million to handle the sudden outburst of recall petitions against legislature members. A legislative committee unanimously signed off on the funding during a meeting Friday. It comes a week after chief electoral officer Gordon McClure advised more money was needed to manage the "unprecedented spike" in recall petitions. McClure's office has issued 21 recall petitions since the end of October. All but one are against members of Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative caucus, including the premier herself. McClure told the committee last week that verifying each petition would cost just over $300,000 and that $1.5 million is needed for shipping and postage of petition documents. Another $2.4 million was needed to handle staffing costs, McClure had said. Many of the United Conservative Party MLAs on the committee said Friday they were glad to see Elections Alberta crunch…...

Mitch Sylvestre told Postmedia in a Friday interview that the APP's application is "complete and in the system" and that it included a revised question that draws in part from language in the federal Clarity Act: "Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent…...

Corb Lund must re-apply to launch anti-coal petition drive in Alberta
1+ day, 21+ hour ago (479+ words) LETHBRIDGE - Amendments to Alberta's legislation on citizen-initiated referendums mean Corb Lund's recently approved application for a petition drive to stop new coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains is cancelled and the singer has to re-apply. Elections Alberta had posted the official OK on its website Monday for Lund to soon start collecting signatures for his petition. But the agency says in a Friday news release that amendments to electoral legislation that took effect this week mean petition applications made before Thursday, for which an initiative petition has not been issued, are "deemed to have never been made." The release says it applies to Lund's No New Coal Mining in Alberta's Rockies application because even though it was approved, a petition was not issued. A bill passed this week removes a number of requirements that future referendum…...
